Why the southern river, not the brochure circuit

Peru’s Amazon is not one place. The map we travel is Madre de Dios: Puerto Maldonado, the river, oxbow lakes, macaw clay licks, and lodges set back from the crowd. We do not sell the northern cruise. We do not invent a jungle you cannot reach from the desk in Cusco.

Refugio Amazonas is four days and three nights. The days are written for families — a watching pace, not a backpacker circuit. Wildlife is not guaranteed. The forest is the work; we do not rush it, and we do not stage a zoo.

When the river holds

We publish May to October for this lodge week: the drier southern-Amazon window, when trails and clay licks are more often walkable. The forest is still wet. Long light sleeves, insect protection, and shoes that can take a trail are not optional.

If you are coming from Cusco, the air changes in a morning. That is a gift after the high country — and a reason not to book the forest as an afterthought on the last afternoon of a highland week. Give the river its own days.

  1. Day 1: Puerto Maldonado – Refugio Amazonas – Orientation

    Land in Puerto Maldonado. The river takes you to Refugio Amazonas. Orientation at the lodge: how the forest is walked, what the night holds, and a first evening that lets the altitude of the Andes fall away.

  2. Day 2: Discover the oxbow lake

    A still lake day — canoe, birds, and whatever the water offers. Families move at a watching pace. The forest is the work; we do not rush it.

  3. Day 3: Join a party full of colors and sounds

    Macaws, canopy, and the noise the forest makes when it is left alone. Clay licks if the day is right. A party of colour and sound — not staged, not a zoo.

  4. Day 4: Refugio Amazonas – Puerto Maldonado

    A last morning on the river, then back to Puerto Maldonado and the flight out. We will not rush the goodbye.

What to pack for the river

Insect protection, long light sleeves, shoes that take a wet trail, a rain layer, and a small personal kit. Lodge nights, river transfers, the oxbow, and meals as specified are in the published plan. International and domestic flights are not. The desk will say what the week actually holds before anything is charged.

Frequently asked questions

Will we see a jaguar?
We will not promise an animal. Macaws, the oxbow, and the canopy are the days we compose. A jaguar is the forest’s business, not a line in a brochure.
Is this suitable for children?
Yes — this is published as a family expedition. The pace is watching, not marching. Tell the desk ages and we will say whether the boats and walks will hold.
How do we get there from Cusco?
A domestic flight to Puerto Maldonado, then the river to the lodge. Flights are not included. We meet you at the gate we publish — not at a jungle we do not operate.
Can this follow the high country?
Yes. Andes into the Amazon is a journey we already name: high country first, then these river days. Give each world its own nights. Do not ask the forest to be a single afternoon after Machu Picchu.
